The Australasian Dark Sky Alliance has launched a petition calling on the Australian Government to introduce legislation to control light pollution. We need 10,000 signatures before 19 September for the government to even consider it.

Artificial light is spreading at an astonishing rate, washing out the stars and silencing one of travel’s most awe-inspiring experiences. For many people, standing beneath a star-filled sky is life-changing – yet fewer and fewer can do so close to home.

When we travel, we often seek the extraordinary – coral reefs before they bleach, glaciers before they melt, ancient sites before they crumble. These are often called “last chance” destinations. Increasingly, dark skies are joining that list.

From a tourism perspective, dark skies are more than a pretty backdrop. They extend visitor stays, inspire new night-time tours, create opportunities for cultural storytelling, and support local businesses. Places that protect their night sky can attract travellers seeking authentic, sustainable experiences.

Dark skies are not only good for stargazers – they’re vital for wildlife, human health, community identity, and economic opportunity. But once lost, they’re almost impossible to get back.

Please share it widely – with friends, colleagues, your travel networks – because we only get one shot at this. Let’s ensure that future generations of travellers can still look up in wonder at a truly star-filled sky.
