The Department of Industry, Science and Resources and Macquarie University are proud to present Exploring the Universe with ESO's Super Telescopes: The 2022 Allison-Levick Lecture on Thursday 1 December.

This special event, introduced by Professor Fred Watson, will commence with a presentation from our special guest, Professor Xavier Barcons, Director General of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Professor Barcons will showcase cutting-edge astronomy using the expansive suite of ESO's facilities and foretell future discoveries with the next generation of ultra-large, ground-based telescopes.

During this session, a panel discussion will be conducted on the frontiers of astronomy and its educational, societal, and cultural benefits. There will be plenty of opportunities for audience members to ask questions during this insightful discussion led by Professor Ivison, Professor Linda Tacconi, Associate Professor Richard McDermid, and Dr Devika Kamath.

The Allison-Levick Lecture is an annual memorial event, funded by a bequest from Mr Jack Allison-Levick, a Melbourne psychiatrist with a life-long interest in astronomy. The lecture’s objectives are to raise public awareness of astronomy and space science and to contribute to Australian education by enabling interaction between distinguished speakers and others in the community. This free public event will entertain and inform the inquisitive minds of high school students, teachers, and the interested public. We hope to see you there!
